Maryland/DC Hands & Voices is recruiting at least three (3) Parent Guides and (3) Deaf/HH Adult Guides in the state of Maryland for a newly funded grant program called Guide By Your Side (“GBYS”) for a period of two years with a potential for additional years. The GBYS Program Co-Coordinator is the parent of a child who is deaf or hard of hearing. This position is responsible for the oversight of the GBYS Program along with the Chapter’s Board of Directors and to oversee and implement the work of the parent-to-parent support activities. Additionally, this position would be responsible for collaboration with appropriate agencies and organizations, and networking amongst various parent groups.
Parent Guides are uniquely able to work with parents of newly diagnosed children who are deaf or hard of hearing or parents who would benefit from connecting with another parent, by providing home visits, telephone calls, or virtual visits to meet our program goals. Parent Guide is linked with a newly-identified family and initiate contact within two days of the referral.
The purpose of the position is to provide exposure to deaf or hard of hearing (DHH) adults, modeling a variety of communication modes and methods, to families with children who are newly diagnosed as deaf or hard of hearing by providing home visits, telephone calls, or virtual visits to meet our program goals. DHH Adult Guides are part-time positions with stipends. D/HH Adult Guides are expected to attend an initial 2-day training and subsequent training approximately 1-2 times per year.
